Thoughts on MiniTool Partition Wizard Free
As is true with most of the free disk partitioning tools we've looked at, every change you make to the partitions and disks with MiniTool Partition Wizard will first be reflected virtually, and then sent to the 'Operations Pending' section of the program.
This is a great feature because you're able to see how the partition changes you make will play out once selecting Apply, all without having to actually wait for each step to complete.
We also like that you can make the system partition larger without having to reboot the computer. Most free disk partitioning tools support this, but not all of them. This means if you have unallocated space that isn't being used, you can quickly apply it to the system partition to enlarge it in a matter of seconds.
The major issue with MiniTool Partition Wizard Free is that some features appear to be an available option only until you select them, after which you're told you need to upgrade to a paid version to use it.
For example, although basic disks are supported and 'Dynamic Disk' options are visible, you can't convert a dynamic disk to a basic disk because the free version doesn't let you manage dynamic disks. You need either the Pro or Server edition to work with dynamic disks.

Casual users might not see the allure of this simple freeware, which not only detects hardware and other system information but also lets you benchmark your system's performance. Users with an interest in what goes on under the hood, however, will appreciate this easy-to-use and informative tool.
PC Wizard 2008 goes to work as soon as it's installed, quickly gathering general system information. The interface has a familiar feel with its easily recognizable icons on the toolbar to save, print, and refresh the data. While it looks like little effort was made to dress up the interface, it is serviceable. The left-hand menu gives easy access to view Hardware, Configuration, System Files, and Resources by category. The main display depends on what you select.
Under Hardware, a system summary is displayed first, and includes all the typical hardware, from the processor to the CD-Rom drive. More detail is available for each, and if you highlight one, the program displays the category to look in. Categories are easily understood, and include Multimedia, Drives, and Mainboard. PC Wizard 2008 supports an impressive five formats to save data, including PDF, HTML, and text. You can copy and print, too, in case you need more options. We were equally impressed by the other menu options, especially under Configuration, which displayed installed Updates, TrueType fonts, and other interesting system information.
The Benchmark tool is set up in much the same way, allowing you to pick a category and run a performance scan. Options include benchmarks for RAM, Video, and MP3 Compression. A graph shows how various elements in a category perform, and you can compare the data over time. This was the icing on the cake as far as this free tool goes. PC Wizard 2008 worked its magic on us, and we recommend this freeware for any user who wants to see what's going on behind the scenes.
What do you need to know about free software?
Aimed at the novice user, this archiving tool fails to simplify the compression process. However, it does thoroughly explain the process, and make it easier to perform extra functions. The ZIP Wizard's plain interface is easily accessed from its Start menu folder or through the file and directory context menus.
Start without selecting a file, and The ZIP Wizard gets very novice friendly. The program's opening window features three large, well-labeled icons to create a new Zip file, add to an existing Zip file, or explain Zip files. As expected, the app features a step-by-step approach to create an archive. A tree menu displays directories, with the files showing on the top right. Simply select files and drag and drop them to the area below the file viewing pane and hit Next.
Onscreen direction and buttons help you name your file and choose a directory. The next screen provides detailed information about the original number and size of the files and the final, compressed size of the archive. The final screen presents large buttons to open the directory containing the archive, create a new Zip file, delete the source files, e-mail the archive, and exit the program.
The process is just as simple when you select a file and choose The ZIP Wizard option from the context menu. There are only a handful of advanced settings to choose compression level, password-protect the ZIP file, and include the file path. Each is well-explained onscreen.

For those users who have no experience creating Zip files, The ZIP Wizard's well-designed interface and plain language instruction will take all the mystery out creating compressed files. Users who don't need this level of hand-holding won't see the need to pay for a program that duplicates such common file compression functionality.
